After years of being very Land Rover or gtfo, I have now fallen a little bit in love with Jeeps after a day at a Jeep off roading centre on Wednesday. Especially the Renegade which is far more capable in the muddy stuff than it has any right to be. So I am now firmly a Land Rover AND Jeep guy.

The Renegade really, REALLY? I had a short journey from the bodyshop to the car rental place and I’ve never felt more that I should of taken a bus in my life. And that was a six or so mile journey through the centre of town.
I laughed when four American tourists left from the Enterprise rental place in it because at least it wasn’t us taking it home but a crappy Hyundai i30 instead.

Is your project still in the specialist shop?

Nope, this photo is from yesterday when I picked it up :) all the underpinnings are done so now it’s paint, upholstery, wiring and engine/drivetrain overhaul time. Luckily my work is seasonal.

I will always appreciate an informed opinion! One of my favourite little shouldn’t-be-as-capable-as-it-actually-is off-roaders is the Fiat Sedici/Suzi SX4

The correct ranking is:
Land Cruiser > G wagen > Jeep > Land Rover
![]() 12/02/2016 at 03:53 |

What, you don’t even rank the Patrol or Hilux? Poor form.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 04:11 |

Yes the Renegade, comparing it to your Skoda or another normal car will make it seem a bit rough around the edges but for a small CUV with the amount of off road ability it has plus the amount of space inside and the price, I think it’s an amazing little thing. Plus it looks awesome in Trail Hawk trim in the right colour (such as orange, drab green etc).
![]() 12/02/2016 at 04:24 |

It really is surprisingly capable off road in Trail Hawk trim, for my brother who is not only a life long Land Rover fan, who also works as an instructor at a Land Rover off road centre to buy one to replace his Defender 110 Landmark and be delighted with it’s off road and on road performance says something.
We will of course miss the Landie when she goes but he was really getting no use out of it, his wife won’t drive it and it just isn’t a very practical car for his family.

Now that I am living in the UK I want a 110 so badly. I really want to find one I can export and take back home with me in a few years, but I’m not so sure I could afford that.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 06:14 |

If you can get a 300tdi with a good chassis, then the rest is easy. There’s plenty of Brit car shops that export parts to the US, especially for Rover/MG. I’m not sure what export is like to the US, but I can’t imagine it costing more than £3k. Give me a shout if you want some help with it :)

Now there’s a juxtaposition!
![]() 12/02/2016 at 06:57 |

It’s my buddy’s Jeep. Told him he’d never live it down.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 07:28 |

I may do that. Of course finding a 300tdi with a good chassis isn’t exactly easy. From what I understand US customs wants everything to basically be original.

There’ll be a few around, that’s for sure. Some people have actually cared for their Land Rovers with a bit of Waxoyl and tenderness! My Defender is a 1997 300tdi and the chassis is rock solid. If you’re serious I’ll have a look around.

What are these “specialists shops” you speak of?

![]() 12/02/2016 at 07:59 |

Yes but Land Cruiser = Land Rover.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 08:02 |

From what I’ve seen the cheapest and easiest part is the export. Buying it and preparing it for export is the hard part.

No. ;-)
![]() 12/02/2016 at 08:04 |

I will own a 110 one day. I don’t think I’ll go the military looking route though.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 08:29 |

But they’re cheap and well maintained! You can paint them any colour you like
![]() 12/02/2016 at 08:52 |
|
Yes, of course!

Assuming you come back to anywhere near western NC, I can definitely help wrenching or parts sourcing, and there is a full-on rebuilder of Series through Rangie P38 and Disco here in this area.

There’s a bit of a watercolor look to the picture, a hint of unreality. I think your phone fancies itself an artist. Best to tell it it’s not before it goes Georgia O’Keefe and starts working vulvas into all the pictures you take.

...can’t afford a Defender 90...

It’s HDR, sweetheart. Perhaps not modernism, but certainly too modern for you.
Also - Hey look I got the Landy back so now I can actually do some work on it :)
![]() 12/02/2016 at 09:10 |

Work harder, or buy pieces of shit like I do and fix ‘em up!
![]() 12/02/2016 at 09:17 |

I got married. Money goes to stuff she needs/wants first, like a house and future children. I’d never be able to justify something common and inexpensive like a Jeep unless I DD’d it; the cost of a D90 (or a perpetual project) would get me killed.

I figured I needed to make a crack because the oxidized NATO green had done such an odd thing relative to the trees and the rest. Think Coleridge’s painted ships upon a painted ocean, only more painted Landies upon a photographe’d wood. Need to make sure you’re not rotoscoping painted autos onto a background, mind.
Getting it back from the shop is strongly endorsed, of course.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 09:19 |

Well I would buy a military one but paint it like you suggested.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 09:21 |

Yep know them feels. There are way more important things in life than vehicles.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 09:43 |

love that the colour of the vehicles, trailer, everything is the same as the dirt. never need to clean anything.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 09:47 |

So much awesome in this picture. Glad to see you got your Series back!
![]() 12/02/2016 at 09:49 |

Get yourself a 88" Series then. You can pickup ones in pretty good condition for $15k range. They’re pretty easy and cheap to maintain.

And here we see a true Land Rover enthusiast towing a spare with him in case the first breaks down he can still get home. :)
![]() 12/02/2016 at 09:56 |

Entire cottage industry for keeping old Landies on the road because it’s well known you NEVER throw away a perfectly good Land Rover.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 10:22 |

Patrol doesn’t count because #Nissan and the Hilux is a truck!
![]() 12/02/2016 at 10:23 |

You would be really troubled if you met a FJ40.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 10:31 |

Excellent!
![]() 12/02/2016 at 10:32 |

They’ve got a wide range of metric hammers.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 10:35 |

I know it isn’t feasible right now. But maybe in a year or so I would like to start seriously looking (if my wife will allow it that is).
![]() 12/02/2016 at 10:36 |

If all goes as planned I want to come back to Raleigh. So that is a serious possibility.
![]() 12/02/2016 at 10:38 |

but Super Jeep > Land Rover
![]() 12/02/2016 at 11:02 |

Because #Nissan nothing. Patrols are awesome!
![]() 12/02/2016 at 11:04 |

Why?
![]() 12/02/2016 at 11:08 |

They both suck. ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY SYNCRO!
![]() 12/02/2016 at 11:15 |

I thought those old Rovers all required imperial sized hammers.
